Thanks to its big screen and landscape orientation, the iPhone is a device much better watch movies on from earlier versions of the iPod.
The iPod, with its vertical, 2.5-inch wide screen, is a platform video OK — even better for short videos — but the iPhone and its 3.5 inch screen clearly got good video experiences, built from the design phase. Not everything about watching a film – if a purchase, hire or ripped DVD – on iPhone is perfect, but portable video in your pocket it seems now a much more attractive option.
When you start watching the video on an iPhone, the screen automatically becomes a landscape orientation. This provides the best viewing videos, horizontal format replication of modern TVs. Generally this works fine but for some movies have to choose between cutting the edges of the image and watch a smaller image, letterbox. It's not a terrible choice, but it would be nice if the reproduction was smart enough not to force viewers to make it.
The choice becomes a bit more complicated with movies that benefit from a larger image. Dramas based on intense character not lose much by bande nere, but one of my test was Transformers movie, a movie that certainly increases in impact greater gets. To see the whole picture and not lose the edges, I chose the letterbox display and his supervisor smaller image. This may have dampened the thrill of certain parts of the movie, but seeing that the entire image seemed worth.
In General, video Looks and sounds great on iPhone. of course, this is determined, in part, encoding the video, but anything purchased or leased from the iTunes store would be nice to everyone, but the eye far more demanding.
Just as with the iPod, the iPhone in your hands long enough to watch a TV show or movie full can be a bit of taxing. With a long movie, you'll be holding the iPhone a few inches from your face and just the right angle (a small slope in the direction of one of the other can make the image too light or too dark), for a while. With transformers, I was clutching and tilting my iPhone for over two hours.
Some cases of iPhone try to help you with this including built-in stand. I don't know if I see the value of this since it is assumed that you're watching the movie in a place with a flat surface. If you're in a place, like a House, why not watch the movie on a computer or TV (with adapter cables)?
It seems to me that the situation is best suited for watching video on iPhone is travelling. on the phone a long bus, bringing a movie or two together with you, air or train looks like a great way to pass time.
Although not yet a perfect experience, watch videos on the iPhone is a major upgrade on watching the iPod traditional and a great option for travellers.
